Amedeo Modigliani chez Bernheim-Jeune

Un an après son arrivée à Paris, en juin 1907, le jeune Amedeo MODIGLIANI découvrit chez BERNHEIM-JEUNE l’exposition des «Aquarelles de CÉZANNE» qui présentait soixante-dix-neuf oeuvres. Ce fut un choc pictural entraînant une modification de son style. Il ne pouvait imaginer que quinze ans plus tard, BERNHEIM-JEUNE lui consacrerait une grande exposition, la première après son décès.

Bien que Josse et Gaston BERNHEIM-JEUNE n’aient pas eu sous contrat MODIGLIANI, ils ont participé activement à la promotion de ce grand artiste. Nous sommes très souvent sollicités pour faire des recherches dans nos archives MODIGLIANI.

C’est l’une des raisons pour lesquelles nous publions ce livre. Les reproductions ont été réalisées à partir de clichés de verre des années 1920 à 1954.

A year after his arrival in Paris, in June 1907, the young Amedeo Modigliani discovered the exhibition « Watercolors of Cézanne » at Berhneim-Jeune, which showed seventy-nine pieces of work. This was a pictorial shock which led to a change of his style. He could not imagine that fifteen years later, Bernheim-Jeune would devote a major exhibition to his work, the first after his death.

Josse and Gaston BERNHEIM-JEUNE were actively involved in Amedeo MODIGLIANI’s promotion, even if MODIGLIANI was not under contract with the gallery.

As one of the few galleries from that period that are still active today, we are very often requested to make researches in our archives, especially for MODIGLIANI. It is one of the reasons why we decided to publish this book. Reproductions of this book were made from photography on glass (cliché-verres) from 1920 until 1954.
